Cheree Cleghorn | April 13, 2010

Automatic external defibrillators (AEDs) in public places again show their value in saving lives.

This Johns Hopkins study shows the overall survival rate when an AED is used at the scene and through the time period ending with hospital discharge to be 7%.

The sample size was 13,769.

AEDs save lives. They are worth every dollar spent on them, as many studies have shown.

“Application of an automatic external defibrillator before emergency medical services arrive appears to improve survival from an out-of-hospital cardiac arrest, a large observational study showed.

“Overall survival to hospital discharge from 13,769 cardiac arrests was 7%, Myron Weisfeldt, MD, of Johns Hopkins University, and colleagues reported in the April 20 issue of the Journal of the American College of Cardiology.”
