Pandemic Flu Monitor: WHO Investigation Finds No Link Between Deaths And H1N1 Vaccine
Reuters is reporting that a World Health Organization investigation into the small number of deaths among recipients of the H1N1 vaccine worldwide found no instances in which the vaccine was the related to the cause of death.
“No new safety issue has been identified from reports issued to date… Reporting so far reconfirms that the pandemic flu vaccine is as safe as the seasonal flu vaccine,” said Marie-Paule Kieny, a vaccine expert for WHO, according to Reuters.
Meanwhile, a newly formulated vaccine is set to be released next month:
More swine flu vaccine is on the way. Not just bigger batches, but a whole new vaccine approved by the FDA with a new manufacturer. Those new shipments won’t come until next month though. So for now, towns and clinics will have to make do.
Preliminary results from manufacturer Novartis show a lower dose of its vaccine may be enough to give immunity from the swine flu virus. This could potentially free up vaccine to help with the shortage. Dr. Anne Schuchat of the Centers for Disease Control says, “The good news is the vaccine is an excellent match with the virus that’s still circulating.”
